OFFTEC Solutions & Jordan University of Science and Technology to Set Up the Largest Wireless Campus in the Middle East with Supportworks from Hornbill
February 27th, 2006 -- OFFTEC IT Solutions was awarded a tender by the Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) for the establishment of the largest wireless university campus in the Middle East, and the first campus-wide wireless network in Jordan. The network, which will include a help desk solution provided by Hornbill, will cover the entire JUST campus of approximately 11km2, serving the university's 16,000 students.
In order to take advantage of the wireless network, students will be encouraged to have laptop computers on campus, which will enable them to access the internet and the university’s computer network from any location within the grounds, giving them immediate access to online research and reference databases.
Professor Wajih Owais, President of JUST, stated, "We strongly believe in the power of technology to educate. This is part of our continued efforts to integrate technology into our classrooms and the everyday lives of our students. The availability of a wireless network will provide the platform to access a wealth of information, making technology a vital educational resource that can be used whenever and wherever needed."
OFFTEC IT Solutions was chosen to design, implement and manage the network based on its considerable project management experience and the implementation experience it brings through its partners INTEL, 3com, Microsoft and Hornbill.
OFFTEC will be setting up an online help desk, using the latest help desk management system from Hornbill, which will provide users with immediate solutions to any problems they may have, and will track and log all incidents and requests to ensure timely resolutions. To compliment the wireless network initiative, OFFTEC IT Solutions will also be installing the most up-to-date IT security solutions, including an Intrusion Protection system that will prevent access to the network from un-authorised users, as well as providing protection from any malicious attacks.
Mr. Ibrahim Al-Jararheh, GM of OFFTEC IT Solutions said, "This project will provide JUST with the latest and most advanced wireless technology. Combined with the soon to be launched on campus assembled laptop initiative, students will benefit from an advanced educational process providing them a significant advantage in their future careers." Al-Jararheh added that “Creating active online learning in JUST is s step forward; we are hoping to revolutionise and advance the educational process throughout Jordan."
Mr. Gerry Sweeney, Managing Director at Hornbill commented, "Wireless networks can be a very cost effective way to provide 100s or 1000s of users with the ultimate, flexible access to the internet and a corporate or university network. However, the complexity of the systems can sometimes cause issues for users new to the technology so it is vital to have an efficient support function that can deal with issues quickly, providing immediate help and guidance. Hornbill continues to expand its numbers of overseas customers and we are delighted to be working with OFFTEC IT Solutions on this project."
